The concept
of PERSIMMON LANE originated with a little girl's fascination
with her grandmother's brilliantly colored silk brocades
and hand-embroidery tucked away in an antique camphor wood
chest. Founder and designer Jennifer Chang Chernick recaptured
this fleeting butterfly of a memory that evoked such profound
imagery and emotions through a circuitous journey taking
her from San Francisco to New York, Paris, Taipei, Hong
Kong, and finally in Chengdu, the capital of Southwestern
China. There, she found a world where bamboo and tradition
reigned. A bustling metropolis once referred to as the City of Brocade by Tang Dynasty poets and Marco Polo, Chengdu is home to proud artisans whose
way of life has changed little through the centuries. Chengdu
is also a special place that is far away from the commercial
intensity of cities such as Shanghai and Shenzhen. Jennifer
knew that if she chased long and far enough, her butterfly
would take her down a quiet street corner, around the bend,
and into PERSIMMON LANE.
